Following were the activities for Science in Exile in May.
Interim network structure
The deadline for submitting nominations to the Steering Committee was 17 May 2021. More than 60 nominations were submitted, from all regions of the world. The selection is underway and results will be communicated to candidates at the beginning of June. The committee's first meeting will be held in late June/early July. The four Task Teams met for the second time in May and advanced their work across the different activities:
Preservation of Science: members are working on a concept note about what preservation of scientific knowledge and culture means and which activities may be carried out by Science in Exile on this topic.
Mapping and Research: after testing the mapping survey by several task team members, the survey has been launched (see below).
Advocacy Campaign: members have finalized the proposal for the initiative’s new website – to launch within the next 3-4 months – and collected ideas and suggestions for the Science in Exile Declaration and webinar series (see below).
Supporting at-risk, displaced and refugee scientists: members are discussing a series of activities to carry out from 2022 onwards, including regional and international conferences, a mentorship program, and potential awards for both at-risk, displaced and refugee scientists and for organizations that support them.
Launch of the Science in Exile mapping survey
The Science in Exile mapping survey has been launched. The deadline is 31 July 2021.
The survey aims to map organizations and programs globally – e.g., NGOs, institutions, universities, diaspora groups, government bodies and funders – that provide support to and opportunities for at-risk, displaced and refugee scientists. All those who represent these entities are invited to complete this survey and share it with other suitable organizations and programs. The results of the survey will be used to populate a searchable database on the new Science in Exile website. This will be a useful tool both for scientists seeking support and protection, and organizations looking to create partnerships.
Science in Exile webinar series
From June to October, four webinars will be held to raise awareness of key issues and challenges faced by at-risk, displaced and refugee scientists, and to support an increased and stronger global solidarity among scientists. The webinars will focus on different stages of the migration cycle. The first webinar will address contemporary unfolding emergencies: details on the webinar (including how to register) will be published soon on the Science in Exile website.
Science in Exile panel at the SRI2021, 13 June 2021
Science in Exile will organize a panel at the Sustainability Research & Innovation Congress 2021 (SRI2021) on 13 June 2021. Scientists in Exile: A meta-view of the impact of ongoing uncertainty and risks for scientists and the production of science will bring together a group of early and mid-career refugee and displaced scientists working in the area of socio-environmental sustainability and resilience. Using a humanist approach to the preservation of science, the session will draw on exiled scientists’ narratives to explore the impact of displacement, the challenges and the building back, the benefits of support and integration, and how the science community can respond.
