SASTA organized an interactive workshop on Science communication for researchers on 5th April 2021. Mr Mohamed Elsonbaty was invited as the guest speaker for this webinar.
Mohamed Elsonbaty is an Egyptian Award-winning Science Communication consultant, trainer, and freelance Science journalist. Mohamed has published more than 650 articles on various scientific topics during his career as a Freelance Science Journalist spanning eight years. In 2017, he received the ‘Mijbil Al-Mutua Award’ for young science communication professionals in the MENA region. He is also a recipient of a prestigious award the ‘EurekAlert! Fellowship’ from the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) in 2019. Mr Mohamed Elsonbaty holds membership in the Public Communication of Science and Technology (PCST) network and the Association of British Science Writers (ABSW).
The workshop provided the audience to discuss diverse themes in making scientific communication effective and efficient with the Guest Speaker. Answering the questions of participants, Mr Mohamed highlighted the practice of correct tone and direct speech in attracting the attention of the listeners. He also explained the use of precise social media platforms and the appropriate ways of disseminating sensitive scientific information to the younger addressees. In answer to one question, the Guest Speaker emphasised the need to simplify scientific ideas in easy words for better reach to the audience. Mr Mohamed talked about Science museums which are exhibits of objects or activities that present scientific content and are found in a lot of places in the Arab World.
In the end, Mr Elsonbaty gave the participants time in the Q&A session where he extensively addressed the audience’s questions in detail. The two-hour session concluded with the takeaway message from the Speaker that Science communicators should know one person on their own cannot change society, it requires collective efforts of multiple people over a long period. The participants were happy to learn about Science communication through this workshop.
