SASTA Board Elects New Executive Committee





Over the last decade, the Society for the Advancement of Science and Technology in the Arab World (SASTA) has stood as a cornerstone for Arab research, building a robust network of Arab scientists.


By spotlighting the remarkable achievements of esteemed Arab researchers, SASTA has not only amplified their visibility on the global stage but also ignited a beacon of inspiration for the next generation of Arab scientists.


With initiatives like the Global Conference for Diaspora Networks in Science in 2022, which brought together scientists from over 35 countries across various disciplines, SASTA has also facilitated discussions on engaging the scientific diaspora to support the Sustainable Development Goals.


2024 marks a new era for SASTA. The SASTA community can look forward to a continuation of the impactful work SASTA is known for, along with new endeavors aimed at further enriching Arab research. 


In line with this vision, the SASTA board has elected a new Executive Committee. This dedicated group of leaders is set to navigate the path forward, embracing both ongoing projects and the exciting opportunities that lie ahead.


It is now an utmost honor to introduce the members of SASTA’s new Executive Committee.


President and Chair of the Executive Committee: Professor Noureddine Melikechi

Professor of Physics and Dean of the Kennedy College of Sciences




Serving as the President and Chair of the Executive Committee, Professor Noureddine Melikechi, a distinguished Professor of Physics and Dean of the Kennedy College of Sciences, brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to SASTA. 


Born in Algeria and now based in the United States, his expertise lies in atomic, molecular, and optical physics. Professor Melikechi's academic contributions are extensive, including authorship of over 150 peer-reviewed scientific articles and 5 book chapters.


A key figure in NASA's Mars missions, his work involves analyzing data from laser-induced spectroscopy, using instruments like the ChemCam and SuperCam aboard the Curiosity and Perseverance rovers. His excellence in the field is recognized through his fellowship with the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the American Physical Society, and Optica.


With a remarkable record of over 10,000 citations, Professor Melikechi embodies the vision and expertise that SASTA seeks for its next development phase, especially in areas like mentorship within the SASTA community.


Secretary-Treasurer and Executive Committee Member:

Dr Amani Hariri

Assistant Professor of Chemistry, University of British Columbia





In the role of Secretary-Treasurer and as a vital member of the Executive Committee, Dr. Amani Hariri, an Assistant Professor of Chemistry at the University of British Columbia, enriches the SASTA leadership with her unique expertise and vision. 


Hailing from Lebanon and now making her mark in Canada, Dr. Hariri is at the forefront of blending molecular design with optics. Her work focuses on the creation of pioneering single-molecule tools and platforms that are set to revolutionize monitoring and diagnostics in biomedical research.


Dr. Hariri's contributions to the scientific community are notable, with over 10 publications to her name and more than 300 citations, reflecting the significant impact of her research. 


Beyond her academic achievements, Dr. Hariri's dedication to SASTA's mission is immensely promising. She is particularly passionate about leading initiatives like a new summer exchange student program, aimed at fostering connections and opportunities for graduates from the Arab region, underscoring her commitment to nurturing the next generation of Arab scientists.



Communications Officer and Executive Committee Member: Professor Moataz Attallah

Professor of Advanced Materials Processing and Director of Research and Knowledge Transfer at the University of Birmingham





Professor Moataz Attallah, stepping into the role of Communications Officer and serving on the Executive Committee, is a distinguished Professor of Advanced Materials Processing and the Director of Research and Knowledge Transfer at the University of Birmingham. 


Originating from Egypt and now based in the UK, Prof. Attallah has dedicated over twenty years to advancing understanding of material-process interactions within advanced manufacturing processes. His expertise covers a broad spectrum, including additive manufacturing, powder processing, friction joining, and superplastic forming, with a particular focus on how these processes influence microstructure and the structural integrity of metallic materials.


His collaborative endeavors with prestigious entities such as the UK Atomic Energy Authority, GKN Aerospace, and Rolls-Royce plc highlight his significant contributions across various industries. With an impressive portfolio of more than 200 publications and 13,000 citations, Prof. Attallah's research has had a profound impact on the field of advanced materials processing.


In addition to his academic and research achievements, Prof. Attallah has actively contributed to the Egyptian Scholars organization, organizing seminars and leading media activities. His involvement with SASTA as the Communications Officer is set to bridge connections with this organization, leading education and communication efforts to further SASTA's mission and enhance its impact on the global stage.


Executive Committee Member:

Professor Hala Zreiqat

Payne-Scott Professor of Biomedical Engineering at The University of Sydney




Professor Hala Zreiqat, the Payne-Scott Professor of Biomedical Engineering at The University of Sydney, brings the Committee a wealth of knowledge and innovation from Jordan to Australia.


Her pioneering research spans the development of synthetic biomaterials for regenerative medicine, employing state-of-the-art materials science, biological, and nanotechnological approaches alongside innovative 3D printing technologies. Furthermore, her leadership role as Chair of the Council of Australia Arab Relations underscores her commitment to fostering international collaboration and understanding.


Professor Zreiqat's scholarly contributions include authoring over 180 peer-reviewed articles, amassing more than 10,000 citations. Her groundbreaking work in biomaterials and musculoskeletal disorders has not only led to the awarding of four patents but also attracted over $20.5 million in competitive funding. This funding supports a broad range of projects, from national health and medical research to advancements in biomaterials, reflecting her diverse expertise and impact in the field.


Beyond her research, Professor Zreiqat is a dedicated advocate for promoting opportunities for women and young scientists globally. As the founder and chair of BIOTech Futures, she has established a mentorship platform that encourages high school students to explore and pursue careers in science and engineering.


In her role with SASTA, Professor Zreiqat is set to focus on expanding educational and scientific engagement among high school students from the Arab region. Her leadership in BIOTech Futures positions her perfectly to spearhead initiatives that inspire and equip the next generation of Arab scientists, aligning with SASTA's mission to nurture talent and innovation within the Arab scientific community.


As SASTA starts a new chapter, it wholeheartedly acknowledges the leadership and vision of former President, Professor Rana Dajani.


A Word of Appreciation for Former SASTA President




Under Prof. Rana Dajani's presidency since 2019, SASTA has flourished, becoming a beacon for Arab research and scholarship on the international stage.


Balancing numerous roles, from being a Full Professor of Molecular Biology to leading the inspirational We Love Reading organization, she has nonetheless prioritized the mission and vision of SASTA, spearheading pivotal initiatives that have significantly advanced SASTA's objectives.


Among her many accomplishments as President, the organization of GCDNS22 stands out as a testament to her vision. This conference not only showcased the wealth of Arab scientific talent but also fostered dialogue on leveraging the diaspora for sustainable development.


SASTA owes a debt of gratitude to Prof. Dajani for her unwavering dedication and inspirational leadership. Moving forward, SASTA is committed to building upon her illustrious legacy, continuing to spotlight the exceptional endeavors of Arab researchers worldwide.
