Ghina M. Halabi, PhD wrote to SASTA on her founding of She Speaks Science and its sub-program, PENTA: “Every idea starts with a problem. Ours is simple: the world needs science, and science needs more women.
In She Speaks Science, we want to increase active and inclusive engagement with science by encouraging fresh perceptions about science and success, helping young people build a positive STEM identity, and promoting women and minority scientists. Our vision is a world where all scientists are valued, and where science is at the heart of society, not a luxury or accessory.
PENTA is She Speaks Science’s 5-month mentorship programme, with a twist. The programme is designed as a 5-by-5 matrix, where women from 5 different regions (Africa, Latin America, Asia, Middle East, US & Europe) in 5 different career stages engage in 1:1 two-way mentorship experience for 5 months. It aims to build a tightly-knit community of empowered women and girls by providing them guidance and support at various stages of their STEM journey. PENTA also has a unique two-way mentorship model. Each member mentors and gets mentored in an interactive and one-to-one environment.
