Today we want to shed light on one of the great scientists in the Arab world, Ahmed Zewail. Zewail is an Egyptian-American scientist who claimed the 1999 Nobel Prize in Chemistry as the first Arab scientist to win the prize in his field. Zewail was born in Egypt and achieved his degree from Alexandria University, before moving to the US to continue his studies. Zewail was the first scientist to use the term “femtochemistry” which refers to chemical reactions happening at a very fast rate. Despite moving to the US and winning a Nobel Prize, Zewail went back to Egypt and established the Zewail City of Science in 2000, Technology and Innovation on the outskirts of Cairo, which aims to develop the scientific society of Egypt with its motto “Egypt Can”.
أردنا اليوم أن نسلط الضوء على شخصية عربية مميزة جدا في العالم العربي، أحمد زويل. زويل عالم عربي مصري أمريكي، حصل على جائزة نوبل في الكيمياء عام ١٩٩٩، كأول عالم عربي يحصل على جائزة نوبل في مجاله. ولد زويل في مصر و حصل على شهادته الجامعية في الكيمياء من جامعة الإسكندرية، سافر بعدها إلى أمريكا ليكمل دراسته الجامعية.كان زويل أول عالم استخدم مصطلح “الفيمتو” وهو مصطلح يشير إلى التفاعلات الكيميائية السريعة جدا والتي استطاع زويل اختراع مجهر ليزري لرؤية هذه التفاعلات. على الرغم من انتقاله لأمريكا و حصوله على جائزة نوبل، عاد زويل إلى مصر لإنشاء مدينة زويل للعلوم و التكنولوجيا عام ٢٠٠٠ والتي تقع قرب القاهرة وتسعى إلى تطوير مختلف المجالات العلمية في مصر بشعارها “مصر تستطيع”.
